Pastor
Andreas Pielhoop wurde Lutheraner, da er
in eine Familie aus der Hansestadt Bremen geboren wurde.
In der Schule war Religionsuntericht sein Lieblingsfach
sowie später auch Englisch. Nach einigen Semestern Jurastudium und dem Zivildienst, studierte er Ev. Theologie und Psychologie in Bonn. Schließlich beendete er sein Studium mit einem Master
of Divinity vom Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, und mit dem deutschen Pfarrerexamen in Tübingen, den beiden jeweils führenden lutherischen Hochschulen.
Er ist als Pastor zugelassen bei der EKD, wo er in Mainz und Wiesbaden diente, sowie bei der ELCA. 1996 wurde er Seelsorger für ein Jahr beim Stanford
University Hospital und dann für ein zweites Jahr im Barnes-Jewish
Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Nach seiner Ordination 1996 bei der University
Lutheran Church in Stanford nahm er den Ruf von der St. Matthäus-Kirche an, wo er von 1999 bis 2003 diente. Er nahm an einer Sonderausbildung für geistliche Interimsarbeit in Gemeinden mit Pfarrervakanz teil. Nachdem er bei Our
Savior’s in Santa Clara gedient hatte, erhielt er einen speziellen Ruf für Interimsarbeit in der Sierra
Pacific Synode. Im November 2007 wurde er zum Interimspastor der St. Matthäus-Kirche ernannt. Seit 2001 dient er als ein stellvertretender Nachtseelsorger bei der Nacht-Mission in San Francisco . Er ist im Kirchenvorstand der St. Paulus-Kirche und hilft bei der Entwicklung einer gemeinsamen lutherischen Strategie für San Francisco.
Nicole (Hankemeier) Fahlman ist unsere neue Kantorin. In beiden Gottesdiensten leitet sie die Gemeinde an, sowohl bekannte Lieder zu singen als auch neue zu lernen. Ebenso versucht sie, ein kleines Ensemble zusammenzustellen und Sonntagschule für alle Generationen zu entwickeln.
Pastor Hermann Gehrcke gründete 1895 die St. Matthäus-Kirche
für deutschsprechende Einwanderer in der 11. Straße,
zwischen Mission und Howard. Das Erdbeben und Feuer
von 1906 zerstörte das Original-Gebäude, und
es dauerte zwei Jahre, bis die heutige Kirche an ihrem
jetzigen Standort gegenüber Mission Dolores fertiggestellt
wurde.
Die St. Matthäus-Kirche ist die einzige evangelische
Kirche Nordkaliforniens, die Gottesdienste sowohl in
deutscher als auch in englischer Sprache abhält.
Gemeindemitglieder kommen aus der ganzen Bay Area,
um in der im gotischen Stil erbauten Kirche Gottesdienst
zu feiern. Die Kirche ist nach dem Muster der Hildesheimer
Heimatkirche von Pastor Gehrcke gebaut worden.
Die farbigen Glasfenster der Kirche gehören zu
den schönsten aller Gotteshäuser der Bay Area.
Das Fenster direkt über dem Altar wurde von Helene
Strybing gespendet, die in San Francisco für das
Arboretum im Golden Gate Park bekannt ist. Ein anderes
Fenster ehrt Albrecht Küner, einen deutschen Graveur,
der 1849 nach San Francisco kam. Er schuf die Gravur
für das Staatswappen von Kalifornien.
Im Altarraum mit seiner ausgezeichneten Akustik bereichern
oft örtliche und internationale Chöre und
Solisten den Gottesdienst.
Viele Familien feiern Hochzeiten und Taufen sowie Trauergottesdienste
in der St. Matthäus-Kirche. Wir freuen uns auch
auf Nicht-Mitglieder und Freunde der Gemeinde.
Der St. Matthäus-Frauenverein hat eine Tonne in
der Gemeindehalle, wo man Konservendosen für die
Notleidenden der Bay Area abgeben kann.

Pastor Andreas Pielhoop became a Lutheran
by virtue of being born into a family from the Hanseatic
City of Bremen in Germany. Religious education was
his favorite subject at school, as well as English
later on. After a stint in law school and the mandatory
social service as a conscientious objector, he enrolled
in Theology and Psychology in Bonn. Eventually, he
completed his studies with a Master of Divinity degree
from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota,
and the German equivalent from Tübingen, both
the premier Lutheran seminaries in each country.
He is on the roster of both the church in Germany, where he served in Mainz and
Wiesbaden, and with the ELCA. In 1996, he trained as a chaplain resident at Stanford
University and added a second year at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in
St. Louis, Missouri. After being ordained at University Lutheran Church,
Stanford in 1996, he accepted a call to St. Matthew's, where he served from 1999-2003.
He underwent special training for interim ministry and after serving at Our
Savior's in Santa Clara, he received a call from the Sierra Pacific
Synod to interim ministry. In November 2007, he was appointed interim pastor
at St. Matthew's. Since 2001, he has served as an assistant Night Minister in
San Francisco. He has been a council member at St. Paulus and is working towards
developing a joint Lutheran strategy for San Francisco.
Nicole (Hankemeier) Fahlman is our new Worship Music Leader. As a cantor she will help the congregation in singing "old" hymns and learning new ones and will work towards developing a singing ensemble and an inter-generational Sunday school.
Pastor Hermann Gehrcke founded St. Matthew’s
in 1895 for German-speaking immigrants on 11th Street
between Howard and Mission. The 1906 earthquake and
fire destroyed the original building, and it took two
years to build the new church as it now stands at the
present location across from Mission Dolores.
St. Matthew’s is the only Lutheran church in Northern
California that has weekly services in both English
and German. Members come from all over the Bay Area
to worship in our beautiful wooden gothic church. The
design was patterned after Pastor Gehrcke’s home
church in Hildesheim, Germany.
The church has some of the most beautiful stained glass
windows of any church in the Bay Area. The window directly
above the altar was a gift of Helene Strybing, who is
known to San Franciscans for the Arboretum in Golden
Gate Park. Another window honors Albrecht Kuner, a German
immigrant who came to San Francisco in 1849. He was
an engraver by trade and made the engraving for the
state seal of California.
In the sanctuary, which has excellent acoustics, local
and international choirs and soloists often enrich the
services.
Many families hold their weddings, baptisms, as well
as funerals at St. Matthew’s. We also welcome
non-members and friends of the congregation.
The St. Matthew’s Frauenverein has a barrel in
the Fellowship Hall where one can place canned goods
for the needy of the Bay Area.
