Church History

St. Matthew’s is the only Lutheran church in Northern California that has weekly bilingual services in German and English. Members come from all over the Bay Area to worship in our beautiful wooden Gothic church. The design was modeled after the founding Pastor Gehrcke’s home church in Hildesheim, Germany.

The church has some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in the Bay Area. The window directly above the altar, for example, was a gift of Helene Strybing, who is known to San Franciscans for funding the Arboretum in Golden Gate Park. Another window honors Albrecht Kuner, a German immigrant who came to San Francisco in 1849. He was an engraver by trade and made the engraving for the State Seal of California.

We are located in the Mission District, a vibrant multi-ethnic community in the heart of San Francisco. The famous Mission Dolores, across the street from St. Matthew’s, is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco. Dedicated in 1791, it survived the 1906 earthquake which destroyed much of San Francisco.

What We Believe

At St. Matthew’s our Christian faith is rooted in the good news of God in Jesus Christ. We call this the Gospel. The Gospel is the story of Jesus Christ, told, interpreted, and celebrated in all its significance at the center of our faith and worship. It is normative for our lives as Christians.

We confess the Triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In our preaching and teaching we trust the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe.

The Bible is where we find the Gospel (although the Bible contains much more than the Gospel), and we cannot know the Gospel without it.

St. Matthews Church

In the Heart of the San Francisco Mission District- a Piece of German History

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, directly across from the Mission Dolores, is a tangible reminder of both the city’s ethnic evolution and its little-known German past. Today, St. Matthew’s is the only Lutheran church in Northern California offering weekly bilingual services in German and English.

Join Us Every Sunday At 11am for Bilingual Worship and Christian Fellowship.
