GOD AT WORK... QUIETLY AMONG US
Summer doesn’t always bring dramatic change—especially here in San
Francisco, where the fog rolls in and the temperature hardly notices the season.
And for many, the rhythms of daily life remain steady year-round. Still, there can
be a subtle shift: a slightly slower pace, a bit more space to notice what is
already there.
It is in this season that the lectionary turns to parables in the Gospel of
Matthew—stories of seeds, yeast, treasure, and a pearl of great value. These are
not grand or spectacular images. And yet Jesus says: this is what the kingdom of
heaven is like.
Hidden. Growing. Quietly at work.
A mustard seed becomes a tree. Yeast disappears into dough and transforms it
from within. A treasure lies unnoticed until someone sees its true worth. Again
and again, Jesus points us not to what is obvious, but to what is easily
overlooked.
We often look for God in what is clear and unmistakable. But the kingdom does
not depend on spectacle. It unfolds in small acts of kindness, in conversations
that heal, in communities that continue to gather and care for one another.
Often, we cannot see it happening. Only over time do we realize that something
has changed—that hope has taken root, that love has done its quiet work.
There is comfort in this: God is already at work, even when we cannot perceive it.
And there is an invitation: to pay attention.
Where is life quietly taking root?
Where is grace at work beneath the surface?
The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed—
closer than we think, already growing among us.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Beate
